You and your spouse said “I do” ten years ago. You raised a family together in your beautiful home and thought you were living the dream. Lately, however, you’ve been feeling unhappy in your marriage. You find yourself wondering if you’re headed for divorce.
The signs that divorce is on the horizon can be obvious. Things like vicious arguments, alcoholism or unfaithfulness are enough to bring a marriage to its end. There may also be more subtle signs.
Signs that divorce may be imminent
These signs could be pointing you toward divorce:
- Arguments happen often. Simple discussions often lead to big fights, no matter how hard you try.
- Intimacy is lacking. The two of you have separate bedrooms and prefer it that way.
- Resentment has crept into your marriage. There are times when we all feel some resentment toward our partners. However, if this is how you normally feel, your marriage may be in trouble.
- Avoidance has become a way of life. You do everything you can to keep from being with your spouse. You may stay late at work or grab a bite to eat alone in order to avoid spending too much time with them.
Recognizing that a divorce may be inevitable can be painful. Yet, you must be true to yourself. Take a moment to ask yourself these questions: “When was the last time that you felt close to your spouse? Do you think the marriage can be saved?”
If the answers to those questions leave you feeling like it’s time to file for divorce, talk to your spouse. Uprooting your lives is not necessarily something that you want to do, but in the end, it may be the best option for the two of you.
