What kind of custody arrangement works best for nursing babies?

If there is one thing that is true, it’s that babies need a lot of time and attention from their mothers when they’re nursing. Babies may rest much of the time, but when they’re awake, they should be with their parents and loved ones in order to bond.

Developing an infant custody agreement is tough, especially in the early weeks of a nursing child’s life. During that time, it’s essential for them to stay close to mom, but dad should also get to play a role in his child’s life.

Think about what’s best for your child

When you set up a custody arrangement for an infant, you need to think about what is best for your child. Usually, that means that both parents should come to the child, not the other way around. For example, if the baby is living with their mother, then the father with visitation or custody rights could come to that location for visitation time.

Babies are so young that they can’t be apart from the nonprimary parent for more than a few hours at a time, and nursing can make that even more complicated. It’s usually beneficial to set up an arrangement where the baby will see the nonprimary parent a few times a week for a few hours at a time. Being consistent with this is important because consistency helps an infant get into a routine.

Once your child gets older and is no longer nursing, you can address the option of overnight visits and longer day visits away from home. For at least the first several months, it’s best to keep visitation simple for the infant’s sake.
